File Extension 3G2 : Details and related Issues

There are literally thousands of different file extensions in use today and many of them such as 3gp may be confusing. You might have never seen this file extension on your computer. But if you think it looks familiar, that could be because you have seen it somewhere else—perhaps on your cell phone or other wireless device. The abbreviation .3gp refers to video/audio files that are created and delivered through 3rd generation high-speed wireless networks.  The 3rd Generation Partnership Project is a global set of standards for the transmission and playback of multimedia files. 3GPP2, commonly shortened to .3gp is “A popular format used for viewing videos on mobile phones.”

File extension 3G2 is used by 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 standard files. These files contain audio-video data that is encoded by a modified version of MPEG-4 Part 14 container format. Modifications were done to simplify the format for the purpose of optimal transfer of multimedia data over 3G mobile networks. 3G2 files are particularly optimized for CDMA-based networks. File extension .3gp files us similar container format except that it’s optimized for GSM-based networks. 3G2 files use H.263 or MPEG-4 algorithms for video compression and AAC or AMR for compressing audio-streams.

Most modern phone support at least playback of 3G2 files and many support recording them. There are many programs that play these files on PC including but not limited to: MPlayer, VLC media player, QuickTime, Media Player Classic etc.
If someone sends a .3g2 file to your computer, you will have to have the correct software to open it. As both .3gp and .3g2 standards are based on MPEG4 standards derived from Apple QuickTime, (Filext) this is probably the most commonly used software to open and play .3g2 files on both Windows and Mac computers. Another option to open .3g2 files is Videolan’s VLC Medias Player. (File Info) The same information applies to cell phones, so if you are trying to send a video to a friend’s cell phone, they need to have Quicktime or the equivalent installed on their phone to view your video.

If you want to be able to edit your .3g2 files on your PC, you will need a video converter program that will allow you to convert .3g2 files to formats such as AVI or MPEG. There are numerous free programs such as Super Media Converter and Quick Media Converter that will allow you to do this.
